World Aids Day 2017

(Original lyrics by Leonard Cohen)

I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
but you don’t really care for music do ya?

It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift
the baffled king composing Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name but if I did, well, really what’s it to ya?
There’s a blaze of light in every word;
it doesn’t matter what you heard
the holy, or the broken Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

I did my best; it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I learned to touch
I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of song
with nothing on my lips but Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Oh! Yes, there is a God above
and we really need to learn from love
and not shoot at someone who outdrew ya!
We’ve seen the flag on the march arch
but love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

I know you came to rescue me
this baby boy would grow to be
a man, and one day die for me and you
Our sins would drive the nails in you
that rugged cross was our cross too
Still every breath You drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Journey of Lent

New Song Church

New Song Church

We come here today to hear Your Word and to be reminded that whatever it is that we have lost is nothing compared to what is found in Jesus Christ. We pray that You would help us to read and then look up from the pages of the bible so that we can stare into the face of Jesus and confront the truth and the impact of the cross. Infuse us with what we cannot see during this journey to Gethsemane, to Golgatha and the resurrection.

Remind us that even though we revel in Epiphany we do not live there, but we remain forever in Emmanuel, God with us.   “The Law says, ‘do this,’ and it’s never done. Grace says, ‘believe in this,’ and everything is already done.” (Heidelberg Disputation). So even if we do not have perfect faith let us have honest faith in a God that we so desperately need.

We are people of bread and water who hunger and thirst because we are limited by our own humanity and beholden to confront our need for the cross. You have called us to this place, and not one of us knows what our journeys will do but we pray that we will commit to those journeys knowing that the greatest guide that we have is the guide of love: the love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

(This prayer was based on a sermon by Pastor Stan Mitchell of Gracepointe Church in Franklin, Tennessee)

Love God, love ourselves, and love our neighbor

New Song's first time marching in Las Vegas Gay Pride 2014

New Song’s first time marching in Las Vegas Gay Pride 2014

Almighty One, thank You for being the truth, thank You for being the Way, and thank You for being the Life.   Make our love for You and each other be as real as Your love is for all of us. Lift our eyes away from ourselves and reveal to us the world that You want us to see: a world that needs hope, compassion and peace.

We cannot love God, whom we do not see, and hate those that we do see. So let us forgive and let go of what once was and move forward and enter into Your promise that lives in the here and now, so that we can stand up for love…stand up for the elderly, the poor, the sick, and the broken hearted. Help us to stand up for our brothers and sisters, in this very room, whom the world has forgotten. Help us to stand up for You, so that our light will shine and glorify our Father in heaven.

Shine in our lives Lord “so that we can see that to follow You is less about avoiding sin and more about courageously and actively doing God’s will” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer). For it is through Christ, that we can do what the world will not do for us: Love God, love ourselves and love our neighbor.
