2 Corinthians 5.17

Guide us now, oh Great Redeemer, to a place of community with You and with each other. Engage us with a needy world, so that when we see each other, we see God in every expression. Equip us with the understanding that, “it doesn’t matter if we’re right, it matters if we are in relationship” (Pastor Leila Ortiz) with each other and with our Creator. Give us the strength to let go and let God, so that we can invite those who are thirsty and hungry for more than what this world can offer.

Other’s might laugh and gossip, but God knows and walks with each and everyone us. So let’s walk with each other, not against each other, and let’s do what God does; care about those that the world does not.

Let us be the Church

Creator God, rebuild every good thing that has been destroyed. Teacher, call to us and draw us into Your story. Make us active players in Your narrative and in this community. Clear our eyes to see those who are not safe. Tear down the walls so that we can reach out to those living in the margins. Unbind us from fear so that we can be Your hands and feet. Meet us where our condemnation and our limitations collapse.  Meet us.

You invited us to Your table by taking the lowest place in ours. You humbled Yourself and gave Your life so that we could live. Give us the courage to receive the Holy Gospel and make us alive. Begin the healing now so that we can be the Church that invites all and sees all. Let us not leave this place as we came, but with changed hearts and minds that have seen and experienced the risen Lord. Let us be the Church again. Let us be the Church.

We came as sinners but leave as saints

We came as sinners

Merciful Creator, “You are the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev. 22:13.) You are the only constant in the continuum of life. Connect us to You, to each other, to all times, to all places and to Your greater plan. Disengage us from the world, and silence the noise of the many and tune our ears to the voice of the One. The One who runs to His prodigal children who were lost but now are found.

We’ve carried too much, and we come to this house to lay down our burdens. It is time to leave the anger, leave the pain, leave the sadness and leave the fear at the foot of the cross so that we can find God in the spaces and moments in between life’s first cry and final breath. We came here today as sinners but we leave here as saints, redeemed by God, moving ever forward into the story of love, forgiveness, hope and grace.

Unite us in the solution of the Gospel

Great Defender, we come here for sanctuary because “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17) and no one is excluded from the grace of God. We’re here because we can’t see what You see, we can’t hear what You hear and we can’t feel what You feel. Open up the depths of our humanity to the awareness of Your compassion. Stop us from pointing fingers. Unite us in the solution of the Gospel of God’s love which “does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (and it) never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:6-8).

We have a lot of work to do. Lord, show us today how we can repair the wounds that divide us. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all” (Galatians 6:9-10) so that it shall be on earth as it is in heaven, just as the Father has always intended it to be.

We will not be afraid

Image-1

Author of Life, because You “are with us; we will not be afraid” (Psalm 118:6). We’re here because there will always be questions on this side of heaven and we don’t have the answers. So pour out Your truth into the deserts of our hearts and speak into our history, speak into our now and speak into our future so that we can be smart enough to know that we do not ever need to sit comfortably in darkness.   We need to keep moving forward past the valleys, obstacles and mazes of life, one step at a time, towards the eternal light of God.

We will always know what we have done. Good and bad, we release all of our past into Your hands as You wash away the burdens of our mistakes and our fears.   Because of You, we can be a perpetual morning sunrise, always made new, filled with new possibilities in this story of life. Because of You, we know that each one of us matters to the One who created us.

Use courage

Image-1

Almighty God, comfort us now. Be the light in the midst of darkness and tragedy. Be our vision to see the lessons that need to be learned. Be the strength that we need to forgive those who have hurt us and give us the courage to persevere the storm. We complicate things so much that we blind ourselves from seeing the simple answer. You, Lord, are the answer. So stop our excuses because what really matters is what we do and not what we say. Remind us that You don’t use caution in loving the sons and daughters of God, You simply use courage.

“When something bad happens, we have three choices: we (either) let it define us, we let it destroy us, or we let it strengthen us” (Frank Langela).   Be our strength, O Lord, so that we can, “do something beautiful for God and take risks for love as Jesus risked his life for us” (Mother Theresa).   Let those living in the margins and the shadows be the standard of who we need to reach, protect and defend in the name of the only One who has and will always defend us.

Our story intersected with God’s story

13342976_10206164566656767_532406431631104480_n (1)

Salt House Church in Seattle, Washington

Lord of all, we are here today because our story intersected with Yours at the cross and in our hearts through the One who changed everything from the inside out.   Break open the floodgates of truth so that we can remember who we are: children of God who are forgiven and loved.

Lord, say exactly what you have gathered us to hear today. Speak directly into our hearts and our situations. Dim down the lies of the world so that we can remember where our hope comes from, where our strength comes from, and where love comes from.

“There is no prison so dark, or persecution so great, that can limit the power of God from breaking into and breaking through our circumstances…so there is no need to hide in the shadows of fear and intimidation” (Brenda Salter McNeil).  Instead, let us stand up for what is, what was and what will always be the Gospel: the good news that the battle has already been won. “May we know God in His suffering that we might know him in the power of His resurrection” (Brenda Salter Mcneil) and fall in love with the mystery of the Creator, the Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Love chose us

New Song Crosses

New Song Crosses

Lord, thank you for bringing us into the beginning of a new day, a new week, and a new chance to do better things.   “Open our minds to an awareness of our unbelief, so that we might remember our transgressions and turn with all of our hearts to You, O God” (St. Patrick) because You have faith in us even when we don’t have faith in You.   Give us the courage to close the doors when it’s time to move in a different direction. Don’t let anything stand in the way of Your light and Your truth.

“So many of us spend our whole life imagining ghosts and worrying about the future but all there will ever be is what’s happening here (and now) and the decisions we make in this moment are based in either love or fear” (Jim Carrey). God is love, the One where love comes from, the One who loves us, and the One who is the source of our love for each other. Love chose us and love dwells in us. Let Love silence our fears and insecurities as we ponder the mysteries of faith in the Triune God.

Bridge the gap

FullSizeRender

Holy Spirit, bridge the gap between our hearts and the heart of our Creator because “no sinner ever comes to Christ until the Holy Spirit first comes to them! And no sinner will savingly believe on Christ until the Spirit has communicated faith to them” (Arthur Pink). Communicate to us, O Lord, and interrupt the superficial chatter that permeates this world. Drop our façade of perfection and bring comfort to a disarrayed mind. Move in us and through us. Don’t let us hinder the flow of the Word of God. But instead, let us be beacons of light that reflect Your message of love, compassion, justice and mercy for all people.

“God creates faith in the human heart the same way that He created the world. He found nothing and created something” (Martin Luther).  Together, with one another and with our Creator, we can make a difference that will send ripples and waves throughout the oceans of time, so that every generation and nation will know the indestructible love of Almighty God.

Let the church arise

FullSizeRender

Loving God, make this a moment of awakening. Eliminate the distance that we create between the Creator and the created. Transcend the circumstances of our lives and allow the current of Your Holy Spirit, the waters of grace and mercy, to take us where we need to go. Expand our minds with whatever has shifted in our life so that we can let go of the things that we have no control over.

The only thing that we can control is how we choose to live and what we choose to learn. But we are always teaching each other by example. So make us reflections of You, O Lord, and let Your church arise.

As we journey further and closer to the day when we meet our Creator, we can trust in the truth that no matter what happens, we are safe in the arms of a God who will carry us into an even more beautiful story than what we could have ever thought of ourselves. So let’s just pause now and breathe in the experience of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
